APFTL Officially Presents Survey Results on Youth Participation in Elections


Dili, 18/04/2023, Alumni Youth Parliament of Timor-Leste (APFTL), officially presented the results of the survey on youth participation in elections to the public at the headquarters of APFTL Becora Dili. The objective of this research is to find out about young people's political participation, political trust and satisfaction with democracy. The survey was presented by APFTL President Zaulino Gomes da Silva.

The methodology in this survey, using descriptive and correlational quantitative approaches, to measure the relationships between one variable and other variables, with a confidence level of 95% and a marginal error of 5%. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 350 young people from 11 municipalities, using random sampling method. The age distribution ranged from 17 to 35, with the average age of respondents being 24. In the gender distribution of respondents, male in 56%, female in 40% and non-binary in 4%. The survey was conducted from February to April 2023.

CONCLUSION

political trust in party leaders and satisfaction with the democratic system in Timor-Leste simultaneously have a 4.2% influence on shaping young people's political participation, and the remaining 95.8% is contributed by other variables not mentioned in a survey it's.

political trust in party leaders has a partially significant effect on youth political participation. Similarly, the variable of satisfaction with the democratic system in Timor-Leste also has a partial influence on the independent variable.

Education, Infrastructure and Health are the issues that young people prefer to receive more attention. There are also other issues such as economy, jobs, social and agriculture, considered as priorities after the three issues mentioned above.

The average response from young people is a positive response to the presence of political parties in the community. Again, the youth's perspective on the subsidy of four dollars per vote for the candidacy of the President of the Republic and political parties, the average response from them was neutral.

SURVEY RESULTS

In this survey showed that, young people's preference to choose CNRT party with percentage (39.9%), choose FFRETILIN party percentage (28.5%), PD (18.3%), choose KHUNTO party (5, 7%) and respondents (7.6%) chose other.

The APFTL survey also shows the reasons why young people decide to choose political parties with a percentage (37.89%) because of figure, (37.58%) decide to choose political parties because of vision, (13.68%) because of history and others ( 10.88%).

In this survey, young people's preference for issues that need to be prioritized by the next government is education (26.96%), infrastructure (24.24%), health (18.81%), economy (8.15%), labor (7.21%), agriculture (5.21%), social (3.13%), and others (6.27%).
